A Sharon man's feet were mangled Tuesday when he was hit by a train that he apparently attempted to jump aboard, police said.

Conrad King, 46, of 87 S. Irvine Ave., Sharon, was hit by a Norfolk and Southern train at 5:18 p.m. Tuesday behind his home, police said.

Police said the train was approaching an intersection and moving slowly when it hit King, crushed and partially amputating his feet. The sandals King was wearing were found 90 feet down the tracks, they said.

King was taken to the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. Hospital officials would not release information about his condition, but police said he was to undergo surgery and a mental health evaluation.

Sharon firefighters were also called to King's home Tuesday after receiving a call that he had lit his propane grill and left it unattended. When they arrived, they discovered King had put his clothes on the grill was trying to burn them.

At the request of police, firefighters shut off the grill and said they checked the home for other problems, but found nothing.
