Urban League seeks mentors for revamped program

Shenango Valley Urban League's Farrell Area Mentoring Program is getting revamped and getting a new name.

The program is now called Urban Village, said Cheryl King of the Urban League. Mrs. King said the program will include youths from other local mentoring organizations such as the ERASE Youth Coalition.

Urban Village needs volunteers due to the number of kids they expect to have involved in the program. There are 70 members of the ERASE Youth Coalition alone, Mrs. King said. She said they need one-on-one mentors, group mentors and chaperones for special events and field trips.

"We're trying to get the whole community involved. We're trying to get parental involvement as well," Mrs. King said. "It does take an entire village to raise a child . . . We in this community have to do it because nobody loves our children like we do."

All volunteers must have state clearances but the Urban League will pay those costs, she said.

The new Urban Village program will kick off with a cookout in Veteran's Square in Farrell from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22.
