Ethel Louise Styers Poole Retired Grove City school teacher was WWII Navy vet A private funeral service was held today for Ethel Louise Styers Poole 509 Highland Ave., Grove City. She died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was 89. Mrs. Poole was born April 22, 1913, in Queen Junction, Butler County, to Frank Styers and Ethel Veve Porter Poole. A graduate of Grove City College, she retired in 1975 from Grove City Area Schools, where she was a fifth-grade teacher in Park Elementary School. A U.S. Navy veteran, Mrs. Poole served in the Waves during World War II and was an Aviation Store Keeper 1st Class, stationed in Miami, Boston and Bronx, N.Y. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City. Mrs. Poole also belonged to Pennsylvania State and National Education associations. Surviving are: her husband, James A. Poole, whom she married Aug. 14, 1948, at home; two daughters, Jacqueline A. Lebron, Grove City; and Mrs. Edward (Vicki J.) Schultz, White Plains, N.Y.; one sister, Frances "Jean" Dickson, Grove City; and one grandson, James A. Lebron, Grove City. Mrs. Poole was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ralph Styers; and one sister, Eleanor Whiteaker. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Norman Lee Hoffman WE retiree was decorated WWII vet, active in church A funeral service with full military honors will be held Wednesday for Norman Lee Hoffman, 1890 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage. He died at 1:05 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. He was 83. Mr. Hoffman was born April 26, 1919, in Irwin, Pa., to Vernon Lee Hoffman and Mary Gadsby Hoffman. He attended Sandy Lake area schools and worked for 45 years as a welder and fitter for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. He retired in 1984. Prior to World War II, Mr. Hoffman served in the 34th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. After World War II began, he re-enlisted in the Army Air Force. During World War II, Mr. Hoffman fought in three campaigns including North Apennines, Central Europe and Po Valley. Having achieved the rank of corporal, he received three Bronze Stars. As a member of Sharpsville Church of the Nazarene, Mr. Hoffman served as a former Sunday school teacher, board member and usher. He also sang in the church choir. He belonged to American Legion Post 162, Sharpsville; and Transfer Sportsman Club. He enjoyed music and playing the piano, masonry work and woodworking. Surviving are: his wife, the former Erma L. Fisher, whom he married Sept. 6, 1945, at home; two sons, Roger L. Hoffman and his wife Gracia, Brookfield; and Larry E. Hoffman and his wife Marge, Hermitage; two brothers, William Hoffman, Grove City; and John Hoffman, Zephyll, Fla.; three grandchildren, Brian Hoffman and Jennifer Mittal, both Brookfield; and Joshua Hoffman, Hermitage; three stepgrandchildren, Dennis Grady, Pittsburgh; Michele Tirpak, Hopewell; and James Grady, Columbia, S.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Tirpak, Alexis Tirpak and Alek Grady. Mr. Hoffman was preceded in death by his parents.

Ronald J. Gough FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. -- Ronald J. Gough, Fort Walton Beach, formerly of Masury and Sharon, died Sunday (8-11-02) in his home. He was 65. Obituary information was incomplete.
GOUGH Leo Popeski Mr. Popeski retired in 1990 from Local 396 of Plumbers and Pipefitters union with more than 40 years of employment. He was a welder. Additional information was given to The Herald. Florence V. 'Vera' Fabry Homemaker was engineer machinist in England A funeral service will be held Friday for Florence V. "Vera" Fabry, 250 Tieline Road, Pine Township. She died at 1:25 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township, after a two-month illness. She was 74. Mrs. Fabry was born July 6, 1928, in Winchester, England, to Robert Cecil Maslin and Florence Kathleen Melody Kent Maslin. Most recently a homemaker, she was an engineer machinist in England. She belonged to the Church of England. Her husband, Emil Paul "Bill" Fabry, whom she married May 16, 1973, died May 23, 1995. Surviving are: six children, Robert Thomas Moreton and his wife Susan; and Stephen Hector Moreton, all Winchester; Deborah A. Burdette and Andrew Paul Fabry, both Grove City; Terry L. Fabry and his wife Melanie, Erie; and Robert L. Fabry and his wife Colleen, also Grove City; and nine grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Fabry was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Phillip Clive Moreton; and one grandson, William Paul Fabry.

Carolyn 'Coco' J. Horvath Retired Cleveland company secretary returned to area A memorial service will be held Friday for Carolyn "Coco" J. Horvath of 4002 Hermitage Hills Blvd., Hermitage, formerly of Sharon and Cleveland. She died of natural causes at 6:35 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in Clepper Manor in Sharon after an extended illness. She was 84. Born Wednesday, Dec. 5, 1917, in Sharon, Miss Horvath was a daughter of the late Peter and Mary Mikalajcik Horvath. She had worked as a secretary at Forbes Brick Co. in Cleveland for many years, retiring and moving back to the valley in 1985.
She was a graduate of Sharon High School.
She is survived by: a sister, Cecelia, wife of Robert Miller, Albion; a sister, Mary Ellen, wife of James Ulan, Hermitage; and a brother, Paul, husband of Dorothy Horvath, Belding, Mich. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Horvath.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Jason Paul McConnell GCHS honors grad, Eagle Scout served in youth groups Jason Paul McConnell, 134 N. Spring Road, Springfield Township, died at 1:38 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Old Mercer Road, Springfield Township. He was 18. Jason was born Aug. 1, 1984, in Grove City to Paul Lewis McConnell and Kathy Lynn Pearson McConnell. He was a member of Leesburg Presbyterian Church. A 2002 honors graduate of Grove City High School, Jason was an Eagle Scout with Leesburg Troop 71 of Boy Scouts of America. He also participated with Leesburg Senior Christian Endeavor and Mercer County Youth Conservation Camp, where he served on staff. Jason also belonged to Venture Crew 178, sponsored by Mercer County Turkey Federation. He planned to further his education in the fall by attending Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Surviving are: his parents, Paul and Kathy McConnell; and a sister, Chelsea Lynn McConnell, age 10, all at home; his grandparents, William "Don" and Mary "Liz" Pearson, Mercer; and Ernest "Glenn" and Barbara McConnell, Grove City; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to Leesburg Senior Christian Endeavor or Leesburg Troop 71, both in care of Jason Schepp, 1377 Brent Road, Volant 16156.
