of stealing vehicles, cops say

Three area teens face a slew of felony charges after allegedly going on a week-long crime spree that featured four stolen cars, two juvenile runaways and nights of camping in the Tionesta area of Allegheny National Forest.

The spree started on Aug. 4 in Greenville, where two 18-year-old men stole a car from a Columbia Avenue garage, according to Greenville-West Salem Township police.

The men -- Joe Cresswell of 122 S. Mercer St. in Greenville and John Thompson, who has no known address -- then picked up 19-year-old Charlotte Weaver of Salem Township and drove to Kinsman in the stolen car, police said. The trio ditched the car in a field and stole another one, police said.

But while in Kinsman, the men jumped out of the second stolen car and bolted into nearby woods after spotting a police car heading in their direction, police said. Ms. Weaver stayed in the car, but after being questioned by Kinsman police she was driven back to the Greenville area; the car had not yet been reported stolen.

Meanwhile, the men made their way back across the Pennsylvania line on foot and then stole a pickup in West Salem Township, police said. After learning that Ms. Weaver was back in Greenville, the men picked her up and headed to Erie, where they picked up two 14-year-old female runaways that they knew, police said. The group of five then headed to Tionesta, where they camped, police said.

Cramped in the cab of the pickup, the group decided to steal another car, police said. They heisted one Sunday in Sugar Grove Township and then headed back to Tionesta, police said. One of the runaways, however, wrecked the fourth stolen car there, police said.

The group then piled back into one car and headed back to Greenville, police said.

Police said they received information that the group was staying at a Maple Drive residence in Pymatuning Township. Police nabbed Thompson, Cresswell and one of the runaways at the residence and picked up Ms. Weaver and the other runaway the following day in Greenville, police said.

Thompson, Cresswell and Ms. Weaver were all taken to jail after their arraignments, police said. The runaways were returned to Erie and they could face juvenile charges connected to the crime spree, police said

Greenville-West Salem Township police said they charged Thompson and Cresswell with two counts each of auto theft, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy and lone counts of burglary and criminal trespassing; Thompson was unable to post $50,000 bond and Cresswell was held on $60,000 bond -- a higher amount because of a previous assault charge, police said. Hempfield Township police said they also charged the pair with two counts of conspiracy and one count of theft by unlawful taking.

Ms. Weaver faces a fugitive from justice charge in Ohio and two counts of criminal conspiracy and one count of receiving stolen property in Hempfield Township; she was held on $20,000 bond.
