Boy accused of assaulting cop with air
pellet gun

A Sharon patrolman was attacked Wednesday by a teen who tried to assault him with what appeared to be a real gun, police said.

Police were called at 5 p.m. to a home in the 400 block of Prindle Street where a 17-year-old boy was assaulting members of his family, Capt. Michael Menster said. When the patrolman got to the home, he confronted the boy and saw the boy was holding a gun that was partially concealed behind his thigh, Menster said.

The patrolman thought the gun was real and tried to disarm the boy, Menster said. At that point the boy pointed the gun at the patrolman and fired, he said.

The gun the boy was brandishing was an air pellet gun, and the shot missed the patrolman, police said. Though it was a pellet gun, if the shot had hit the patrolman it could have hurt him, Menster said.

The boy then hit the patrolman in the head with the pellet gun, Menster said. The patrolman disarmed the boy, who continued to hit the officer, he said.

The patrolman eventually subdued the boy, Menster said, adding the patrolman handled the situation well and prevented any serious injury to the boy.

The patrolman suffered minor injuries but did not seek medical treatment, Menster said.

Charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest were petitioned to juvenile court, police said.
