NEW CASTLE

Seinfeld's coming to Scottish Rite

By Larissa Theodore
Herald Staff Writer

The former sitcom king famous for his starring role in "the show about nothing," is heading to New Castle.

Stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld will perform one show at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in partnership with the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Charlene Osborne, Cathedral Foundation manager, said it took several months to confirm Seinfeld's appearance, but it was well worth it.

"I think it's exciting to have him in the local region," she said. "He's such a positive entertainer in the entertainment field."

The show comes as a part of the Heinz Hall Presents series, which officially starts in December.

It won't be Seinfeld's first performance at the Cathedral. The 48-year-old performed as an opening act there in the early 1980s.

Seinfeld is best known for the Emmy-Award-winning NBC comedy series "Seinfeld," which he created. The half-hour show aired for nine years and made minor characters such as Newman, The Soup Nazi and The Drake household names alongside such popular catchphrases as "close talker" and "yada yada yada." Episodes of the show were devoted to "nothing" and evolved around subjects such as remembering a girlfriend's name and using mail fraud to get money for a defective stereo.

The Cathedral series begins at 8 p.m. Dec. 4 with the "Holiday Pops" show featuring the Grove City Choir, performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Tickets go on sale Monday. They can be purchased through the Heinz Hall box office at (412) 392-4900, (800) 743-8560 or www.pittsburghsypmhony.org
