The district will participate in a three-year pilot project where personnel will be able to access its own historical assessment data via a web-based assessment analysis tool called Value Added Assessment System (VAAS). The web-based statistical analysis system will enable school educators to study historical assessment information to determine indicators of student learning. VAAS is a tool to efficiently synthesize and analyze the relationship among years of historical assessment, student, teacher and curricular data. The data will be used o drive decisions and focus academic improvements in the district.

Leveled books will be offered as part of the kindergarten through third grade reading curriculum. Strategies will be extended for kindergarten through third grade reading proposed at the Governor's Institute; five professionals were trained in this process. Continuation of ability grouping for fourth- through sixth-grade reading and math with mixed groupings for other subjects.

The district will continue hosting Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV languages and Elementary Emotional Support classes in Luther W. Low Elementary School.

   » Personnel changes: Several new teachers have been hired and others re-assigned to new grade levels due to the retirement of five teachers at the end of the last school year.

Michelle McBride has been hired to teach fourth grade; Melissa Gargasz, fifth; Kevin Briggs, sixth; and Michael Shuleski, high school math. John Harper has been re-assigned to second grade from third; Gaylynn Kuncio, second from fifth; Chad Mild, sixth from high school special education; Rebecca Shick, fourth from high school math; and Shannon Nelitz, first from junior high developmental reading.

The district will continue to reduce the size of first grade classes through the class size reduction Title IIA federal program. Mrs. Gilliland will again be the CSRI teacher in first grade. An additional CSRI class will be added for second grade during the 2002-03 school year.

All students will receive a free and reduced-price lunch application to be taken home on the first day of school. The form should be filled out by the parents or guardians and returned to the building office as soon as possible. The menus will continue to be analyzed by computer to ensure confirmation to United States Department of Agriculture "Healthy School Meals Program."

The cafeteria at Luther Low and Oakview buildings will be combined.

   » Curriculum changes/additions: Added honors English nine and 10, video production and entrepreneurship classes and the Adopt-A-School program through the District Attorney's office, all at Wilmington High. The district is looking into starting a DARE program for sixth-graders at Wilmington Middle.

   » Personnel changes: Hired Sally Hiers and Brent Harlan as fourth-grade teachers; and Scott Shearer, second-grade, in the elementary schools; Joseph Anderson and Julie Falba, special education at Wilmington Middle; and Amy Volansky, art; Terry Stoner, Spanish; Joanna Wilson, vocational agriculture; Bess Ondako, English; and Michael Jeckavitch, industrial arts and technology education, all at Wilmington High. A social studies teacher position is has yet to be filled at the high school.

   » Building changes: None.

   » Busing changes: None.

   » Lunch prices: $1.30, elementary schools; $1.50, middle and high schools; $2.25, adults; 25 cents, milk reduced, 40 cents.
