YOUNGSTOWN

Segal art moving to new home

The George Segal bronze sculpture "Steelmakers" will be re-dedicated at 2 p.m. Wednesday at its now home, the Center of Industry and Labor in Youngstown.

The work has been moved from Federal Plaza in Youngstown and restored by David Klahn.

Segal, who died in 2000, was commissioned to create the work in 1978, and he chose to document the men of the steel industry who contributed to the growth of the Mahoning Valley. Youngstown Area Arts Council funded the original commission, and United Steelworkers of America District 1 paid for the reinstallation.

Former Youngstown Sheet and Tube workers Wayman Paramore and Peter Kobly Jr. served as Segal's models. They still live in Youngstown and will be at the ceremony.

The Center of Labor and Industry is at 151 W. Wood St.

Following the rededication, a reception will be held at the Butler Institute of American Art, where Segal's preliminary study for "Steelmakers," made of plaster, is on display.
