Directors
leaving
3 districts

Greenville, Commodore Perry and Sharpsville school boards announced Monday that one of their members had resigned.

Donald Achenbach resigned from Greenville after 11 years; James Foster left Commodore Perry after three years; and Robert Timmerman resigned from Sharpsville after 10 years. All of their terms were due to expire in 2003.

Achenbach called his resignation a retirement.

"It's been fun. We've had a really good time," he said. "This board is probably as effective a board (as) I've ever seen. The school is financially sound and academically sound."

Lynda P. Holm, district business manager, said Achenbach has been an "outstanding" member of the board. He co-chaired the stadium renovation committee, helped with negotiations for two teachers' contracts and established "excellent labor relations" with personnel. He was also an "integral part" of building renovations three years ago, Mrs. Holm said.

Achenbach said he's "graduated" to Thiel College in Greenville, where he and his wife chair the family council. He's also on the college's alumni board and does some work with strategic planning.

By resigning now, Achenbach said, he can give his replacement about six months to serve before he or she would need to seek election in the May primary.

Anyone interested in taking over Achenbach's seat should send a letter of interest to board President Brian Scott before 3 p.m. Sept. 11.

Geography was the reason behind the resignations of Timmerman and Foster. Both are moving out of their districts.

Sharpsville school directors plan to accept Timmerman's resignation at the September meeting and then will search for his replacement. Commodore Perry school district will advertise for Foster's replacement.
