Edinboro lawyer to run against English

U.S. Rep. Phil English won't get to a fifth term in Congress without a fight.

While no Democrat came forward to challenge the Erie Republican in the November election, AnnDrea M. Benson, a lawyer from Edinboro, is running against English on the Green Party ticket.

Her name will be on the November ballot opposite English's, the Pennsylvania Secretary of State's office confirmed Tuesday.

Ms. Benson had to submit 1,377 signatures from registered voters in the renamed 3rd Congressional District, which includes most of Mercer County, to win a spot on the ballot. Campaign co-manager Larry Sawdy said she gathered 2,236 signatures.

"I look forward to giving all voters of the new 3rd District someone who will not be owned by the 'Corporate PACs (political action committees) of America,' " Ms. Benson said in a news release.

English, who was first elected to Congress in 1994, received 70 percent of the $629,524 he raised for this year's campaign from political action committees, according to opensecrets.org, a campaign finance Web site.
