Fire department lands federal grant
Sharon Fire Department has received a $57,733 federal grant to buy new equipment.
Lt. Tony Zarella, who wrote the grant application, said the money will buy 10 new air packs with harnesses and masks, new nozzles for the fire hoses, a new air compressor system and a "mobile air" cascade trailer.
The trailer is a portable air-pack refilling system that will allow firefighters to refill air tanks at the scene of a fire, Zarella said. Now the packs have to be taken back to the station to be refilled, he said. The fire department will also be able to help neighboring departments with the trailer, he added.
The grants are given by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Zarella said about 19,500 fire departments across the country applied about 6,000 grants.
The grant application was broken into four categories, but Sharon applied only applied for firefighting and personal safety equipment, Zarella said.
The grant requires the city to provide a 10 percent match, he said.
