Derringer to headline Pride Ride

Rick Derringer will "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" to headline the Pride Ride at Reynolds Drive-In on Sept. 7.

The "celebration of the American biker" also will feature performances by the Hern Brothers Band, the River Saints, a showing of "Easy Rider" and a poker run.

Gates open at 4 p.m. and the music starts at 5.

Derringer, a guitarist, singer and songwriter, was 16 when his band, the McCoys, scored the No. 1 hit "Hang on Sloopy," which has since been named the Ohio State Rock Song.

Derringer played with Johnny Winter in the early '70s, then with Winter's brother, Edgar.

The Edgar Winter Group produced the hits "Free Ride" and "Frankenstein."

Derringer went solo and scored "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" in 1974.

As a guitarist and producer, Derringer also worked with Steely Dan, Kiss, Richie Havens, Alice Cooper, Todd Rundgren, Cyndi Lauper, Barbra Streisand and Weird Al Yankovic. In the '90s, Derringer reteamed with Edgar Winter and released a series of solo blues albums.

Derringer recently released an album with Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, a smooth jazz project, and a Christian release, "Aiming for Heaven," with his wife and children.

Pride Ride will raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Shriners Children's Hospital, Erie.
