Vets honored with 'Salute'

Carl Marks Band will salute local veterans and military personnel with a "Star-Spangled Salute" at 7 p.m. Monday -- Buhl Day -- at Buhl Farm park, Hermitage.

The 50-member band will be directed by Lou Colella, former Farrell Area High School band director and an instructor at Grove City College and Westminster College, New Wilmington. Guest vocalists will be Alexa Magnotto of Hermitage, who will handle "The Star-Spangled Banner," and James V. Piccirilli of Sharpsville, who will solo on "America the Beautiful."

The final number, "Service Salute," will pay tribute to all branches of the military, and local veterans will take part in the presentation.

The Hickory High School percussion section will offer a color guard salute, and a flag line will be accompanied by representatives of the Shenango Valley's recruiting stations.

The Marks Band will feature a fourth-generation member of the Marks family, Steven Marks, a percussionist. The band has played for more than 70 years. The concert will be followed by fireworks.
