Wilson accused of forgery, theft, cashing stolen check

Thomas J. Wilson Jr., 32, of 242 Mesabi St., Sharon, was arraigned Thursday by District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage, on charges of forgery, receiving stolen property and theft.

Wilson was charged with stealing a check from a Farrell man's checkbook, and cashing it for $100 at a bank branch in Farrell, said Southwest Mercer County Regional police.

The victim said he noticed two checks were missing from his checkbook July 22 and believed they had been taken when he was swimming with friends in Erie, police said.

The checkbook had been left in his pants pocket while he was swimming, police said.

The victim called the bank and asked to stop payment on the checks, but was told one had been cashed earlier that day, police said.

The victim watched a bank videotape and identified the man who cashed his check as Jeff Wilson, police said.

Police said they made a still photo from the videotape and used it to match with photo taken at a previous arrest of Thomas J. Wilson Jr., who used an alias of Jeff Wilson.

The victim identified Wilson from a photo line-up, police said.

Wilson was sent to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $3,000 bond. His preliminary hearing was set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
