Man flown to hospital after crash on freeway
An elderly man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital Tuesday night after a head-on collision on the Shenango Valley Freeway in Hermitage.
Witnesses said the elderly man was driving the wrong way in the eastbound lanes and his westbound car collided with an oncoming car at about 9 p.m. in front of John XXIII Home. They said they did not think the elderly man had pulled from the nursing home driveway because the car was going too fast.
The elderly man was taken to UPMC Horizon, Farrell, then flown to Pittsburgh; the man driving the other car was freed from the wreckage by Hermitage firefighters using a hydraulic prying tool. Police at the scene were unable to release information about their investigation or disclose the identities of the drivers.
