NEW WILMINGTON

Fall makes its entrance, events pile up like leaves

WE are enjoying cool evenings, weekends are filled with football and soccer games, and the banner has been put up announcing the fireman's auction. The fall season is officially under way in New Wilmington. Several area organizations have activities planned that will only add to our enjoyment of autumn.

Fall market is Saturday

Lawrence County's Fall Market will be held Saturday at Marti Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature a flea market and Chinese auction. The auction, which has proved very popular in the past, will feature a rug donated by Marett Carpet, greens fees for Tanglewood Golf Course and certificates from Springfield Restaurant Group. The Civic League reports that area businesses were very generous with their donations.

More vendors than ever are scheduled to set up, with Amish donuts, ice cream, produce and woodworking available. A woodcarver, quilt auction, and craft booths will also be fun.

The Civic League will once again be offering hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza for lunch. Make plans to attend after soccer practice or grocery shopping. The kids can enjoy lunch while mom and dad enjoy the displays and demonstrations.

PRIDE gets busy again

Middle School PRIDE parent/teacher is enrolling members. The cost is $3. By joining the organization you are supporting students with books, science equipment and many school programs. PRIDE's success depends on parental support and community involvement. Contact the school if you would like to help. Many volunteer opportunities are available.

PRIDE will offer school spirit merchandise each Friday during lunch. Sweatshirts and T-shirts will be available with the Wilmington and Greyhound logos. These items make great gifts. Students and community members are welcome to come to the cafeteria and browse.

Mums for sale for $5

The New Vision Class, a Sunday school class of the United Methodist Church, is again offering mum plants for sale. Available for pickup on Sept. 19, they will sell for $5. Orders may be placed by calling (724) 946-8361. Several colors are available.

All-school reunion signups

Don't forget reservations are due for the 2002 all-school reunion this month. The New Wilmington High School Alumni Association is urging alumni and friends to attend. The Class of 1957 will host the event at Wilmington Area High School cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27. Alumni from 1927 through 1958 who attended Wilmington High when it was on Vine Street should have received reservation information. If you have questions or would like to attend, call (724) 946-2218.

Band show is Wednesday

Wednesday, Sept. 25, is the Lawrence County Marching Band Festival, and the annual Fireman's Auction is slated for Saturday, Sept. 28, at Taggart Stadium in New Castle. Both events are not to be missed. Mark your calendars and watch for details in an upcoming column.
