When it comes to style, new clothing store is all right

A new clothing store in Sharon is offering up the latest, "phattest" styles in hip-hop urban apparel, says mother and son co-owners Jawdy and Kevin Austin.

J&K's Fashions, located at 20 South Railroad St., Sharon, carries a variety of name-brand men's and women's clothing from South Pole, P.J. Marks and Watch L.A. to Versace, Paris Angel and Fat Joe 560, a clothing line launched by overweight hip-hopster Fat Joe.

"We have a lot of things that are one-of-a-kind," Austin said. "Our clothing is exclusive and authentic. There are stores that don't carry what we have. At least I haven't seen any of it around."

Much of the clothing J&K's carries are popular urban styles straight from New York and Los Angeles, he said. The Austins are in the process of bringing "Balla" and "O.G." brand-name apparel in for local customers. Denim, sun dresses and evening wear are also available for women.

"What we have in the store is available. We can also order new sizes -- large and small -- and other things ... to be received the very next day," Austin said.

Austin was motivated to open the store for his mother, who has worked from her West Middlesex home for 18 years sewing, creating and altering clothing.

"My mother hasn't retired yet so I thought we'd open a store and get things going for her retirement," he said.

Mrs. Austin, 56, has been sewing since the seventh grade and creates her own clothes as well as clothing for weddings and other special occasions. She said she uses patterns and works freestyle from pictures.

"I don't know how to cook, but I can sew," she said.

She said alterations, custom tailoring and knitted and crocheted garments are available at J&K's, along with wigs, scarves and other accessories.

J&K's was previously located at 157 E. State St., Sharon, for two months, but relocated because of building problems.

Austin, who works at Victor's Printing Co. in Sharon, said business at J&K's has been "so-so," adding that he and his mother haven't done much advertising, but are planning to.

"A lot of people have come in just to see what we have in the store," Mrs. Austin said.

J&K's Fashions business hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
