Boy had hunting knife at dance, police say

State police said they plan to file weapons charges against a Commodore Perry eighth-grader who allegedly brandished a hunting knife at a school dance over the weekend.

The boy, who was not identified, took the knife to a junior-senior high school dance Saturday evening, police said. A chaperone took the knife from the boy shortly after he showed it to others, according to high school Principal Les Cattron.

Cattron said he met with the boy Monday morning and the boy claimed he did not intend to use the knife. The incident, however, was reported to police after the meeting.

Cattron said possessing any type of weapon on school property or at school functions is considered a level-five offense in Commodore Perry's discipline code, making it among the most serious offenses.

Cattron said students who violate the weapons code are suspended for 10 days, pending further action.
