Vocal Group Hall of Famers reflect on induction

By Joe Pinchot

Herald Staff Writer

The Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Museum's induction ceremony this week provided many memorable moments. Following are thoughts from some of the participants who received awards or introduced inductees:

"In the case of the Skyliners, their relationship with Joe Rock, their manager, was more than just artistic and business because Joe was very, in a lot of ways, spiritually like the fifth member of the group. Joe and the Skyliners co-wrote those hits: 'Since I Don't Have You' and 'This I Swear.' He was a very important part of the group. Those of us who knew him know he was a genuine piece of work. He was a character, a wonderful guy."

"I think this is probably the most prestigious thing that could happen to any lover of vocal harmony. I'm very, very grateful for this opportunity. It's the best thing that can happen to someone who loves what he does. I don't do it anymore but I still love it."

-- Joe Verscharen of the Skyliners

"We never got a Grammy (Award) for all those hits we had. We never got paid for half of them, either."

-- Herb Reed of the Platters

"I accept this on behalf of Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis, who were unable to attend today, and the memory of Ron Townson. Ron would have been in heaven on earth because he especially enjoyed these groups."

-- Florence LaRue of the Fifth Dimension

"The most important thing is that the name now, Jay and the Americans, is a much prouder name since Sept. 11. It might have been a little corny. We didn't think so but a lot of people did when we first got it. Now, it really means something."

-- Sandy Yaguda of Jay and the Americans

"Tonight is a dream fulfilled: I got to see Mary Wilson live. Set me free why don't you, babe."

-- Jay Traynor of Jay and the Americans

¥ ¥ ¥

"This only happens once in a blue moon."

-- Fred Johnson of the Marcels

"Mama said there'd be days like these and she wasn't lying."

-- Beverly Lee of the Shirelles
