Eugene K. Peters, 43, pleaded not guilty to felony charges of domestic violence and attempted felonious assault and to misdemeanor charges of assault and criminal damaging at his arraignment Thursday in Eastern District Court, Brookfield.

The charges stem from incidents that occurred Sunday at the home of his estranged wife, Mary M. Peters, 626 N. Stateline Road. Police said Peters hit Ms. Peters, 32, and tried to run her and her boyfriend down with his truck. He also broke the windows in their vehicles with a shovel, police said.

While fighting with the boyfriend, police said, Peters was knocked down and struck his head on the steps. He drove away in his truck, police said.

Police later answered a 911 call about a man who needed medical attention on King Graves Road. The man turned out to be Peters, who was treated at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, for a 3-inch gash on the back of his head and was then taken to Trumbull County Jail, police said.

A preliminary hearing was set for 9 a.m. Monday in Eastern District Court.

Judge Ronald J. Rice set bond at $70,000.

If Peters is able to make bail, "the best thing for you will be house arrest," Rice said.

Rice said the terms of Peters' bond would include a no-contact order with his estranged wife, and he would probably have to wear an ankle bracelet and be placed under house arrest.

"You have a terrible history of violence," Rice said to Peters.

Peters was on probation for a previous domestic violence incident against his wife. She filed for a protective order against him Aug. 8.

Ms. Peters was arrested Aug. 14 following a separate domestic incident. Police said she went to the residence to retrieve her belongings and the couple fought. She was found to be the aggressor and was arrested, police said.

Ms. Peters filed for divorce Aug. 19 with Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
