Cash will be fluttering from store roof

Starting Saturday, it will be raining money in downtown Sharon.

Winner properties will begin a weekly giveaway, valued at $5,000, as a fall promotion. The $5,000, which will consist of $1,000 in $2 bills and $4,000 in "Shop Sharon'' currency, will be thrown from the roof of The Winner clothing store at 32 W. State St. to people on the sidewalks below. The "Shop Sharon" currency can be used in combination with U.S. currency at Winner businesses.

Sharon Mayor David O. Ryan said the city will block State Street in front of The Winner from Shenango Avenue to Porter Way. A couple of extra policemen will be on duty to monitor the crowd.

"We're going to do what we can," Ryan said. He said not knowing what kind of a crowd to anticipate makes things difficult. With the giveaway being publicized in Mercer County and on Youngstown television stations, Ryan said the crowd could number in the thousands.

"Hopefully everyone will be respectful of each other," Ryan said.

The store will be closed during the giveaways, which are set for 10 a.m. each Saturday in October.

In addition to The Winner clothing store, Winner properties include Donna's Diner, Winner Collectibles, Flamingo Rose Gift and Tea House, Buhl Mansion and Spa and the Radisson Hotel in Shenango Township.
