A Greenville volunteer firefighter and his family are homeless after a fire destroyed their mobile home Wednesday afternoon.

Bill and Tammy Hodge and their two sons Billy and Brandon were not at home when the fire started, shortly before 1 p.m. Their two dogs, however, were trapped inside and died.

Mrs. Hodge is a former Greenville volunteer.

Hempfield Township Fire Chief Roy Ritter said a fan in the computer may have sparked the blaze at Lot 70 in Eckstrom's Mobile Home Park, 347 Hadley Road. A state police fire marshal was called to investigate, the chief said.

Linda Freeman, a next-door neighbor who spotted smoke coming from the roof of the trailer, said she called 911. Volunteers were on the scene within 7 minutes of receiving the 12:54 p.m. call but were unable to save the trailer, Ritter said.

Firefighters were called back at 6 p.m. when the fire rekindled under some construction debris, but were on the scene for only about 25 minutes, Ritter said.

The family lost everything; neighbors said the Mercer County Unit of the American Red Cross was helping the Hodges.

Donations and clothing for the family are being accepted at the Greenville fire station at 111 East Ave.

Billy, who is in fifth grade at Hempfield Elementary School, wears size 14 husky pants, size 10-12 shirts and likes Pokémon cards. Brandon, who is in first grade, wears size 7 pants, size 7-8 shirts and likes Tonka trucks, firefighters said.
