Margaret l. Makara Hermitage woman was Overlook retiree A memorial service will be held Friday for Margaret I. Makara, 2183 Revere Drive, Hermitage, formerly of Grange Road, New Wilmington, died at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in the home of her sister, Mary J. Blews, Sharpsville, following an extended battle with cancer. She was 63. Mrs. Makara was born Oct. 31, 1938, in West Middlesex to Frank C. Davidson Sr. and Leona M. Iams Davidson. She attended West Middlesex schools and worked for The Overlook nursing home in New Wilmington for 22 years in the Housekeeping Department. She retired in 1998. Mrs. Makara was a past member of St. John's Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in Sharon. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Courtney and Katie McCullough; and Ross and Logan Ballard. She also enjoyed shopping and going to garage sales with her sister, Mary. Her husband, Joseph Makara Jr., whom she married on Nov. 1, 1958, died on April 23, 1996. Surviving are: two daughters, Julie A. McCullough and her husband William, Hubbard; and Janice M. Ballard and her husband Phillip, Sharon; one sister, Mary J. Blews, Sharpsville; and one half-sister, Sara Flynn; and one brother, Frank Davidson, also Sharpsville. Besides her husband, Mrs. Makara was preceded in death by her parents; one infant daughter, Karen Ann Makara; and two sons, James Joseph Makara and an infant, David Allen Makara. MAKARA Theodore 'Ted' L. Arkward Army vet was longtime Westinghouse worker Theodore "Ted" L. Arkward, 94 Fetsko Road, Shenango Township, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday (10-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 74. Mr. Arkward was born Oct. 3, 1928, in Waynesboro, Va., to Byard W. Arkward Sr. and Jean W. Wilson Arkward. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1946, and later graduated from Youngstown State University. He was a longtime employee of the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was a mechanical engineer. He retired in 1986. Mr. Arkward was a member of Truth Fellowship Church in Kent, Ohio. He was a member of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict. He is survived by: his wife, the former Geraldine D. Young, whom he married Aug. 21, 1955, at home; a stepmother, Josephine Arkward, Sharon; a sister, Jean E. Matthews, Farrell; a brother, Byard W. Arkward Jr., Cartersville, Ga.; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Beryl Ervin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 59 N. Crescent Drive, Hermitage 16148.
ARKWARD Eli E. Bossick Brookfield man earned medals as veteran Eli E. Bossick of 7450 Warren-Sharon Road, Brookfield, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday (10-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 87. Mr. Bossick was born Aug. 9, 1915, in Farrell, a son of Eli and Martha Danchulovich Bossick. He served our country during World War II as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. His decoration and citations include a Good Conduct Medal; American Campaign Medal; European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Bossick retired from LTV, the former Republic Steel in Warren, Ohio, as a welder after 25 years of service. His memberships include the Croatian Fraternal Union and United Steelworkers. In his spare time, Eli enjoyed being a carpenter, plumber, electrician, and builder, as well as reading books on aviation and on World War II. His wife, the former Rose Julia Bartos, whom he married on Jan. 7, 1947, died June 25, 1988.
Survivors include: five children, Robert E. Bossick, Mogadore, Ohio; Patricia R. Golub, Brookfield; Gloria J. Gibson, St. Mary's, Pa.; Kenneth J. Bossick, Youngstown; and Dean A. Bossick, New Wilmington; two brothers, Daniel Bossick, Sharon; and Walter Bossick, Greenville; two sisters, Ann Misik, Cortland, Ohio; and Violet Carpenter, Brookfield; and nine grandchildren.

FISCHER Randall W. Munnell Mercer man worked for Munnell Trucking Randall W. Munnell of 248 S. Maple St., Mercer, died at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday afternoon (10-8-02) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following an extended illness. He was 57. Mr. Munnell was born Sept. 6, 1945, in Grove City, a son of William C. and Beverly J. Mathay Munnell. He attended school in Fredonia and graduated in 1963 from Reynolds High School. He subsequently attended Edinboro State College. Mr. Munnell was of the Methodist faith and was currently employed by Munnell Trucking Inc., Fredonia. He is survived by: his mother, Fredonia; a daughter, Shelly A. Bullock and her husband Matthew, Seattle, Wash.; a son, Timothy J. Munnell and his wife Kristen, Bozeman, Mont.; a sister, Carrie M. Necastro and her husband Jerry, Brookfield; three brothers, Lawrence C. Munnell and his wife Akio, Fredonia; Frederick H. Munnell and his wife Mary, Cleveland; and Thomas O. Munnell and his wife Linda, Mercer; two grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews. Mr. Munnell was preceded in death by his father, William C. Munnell. MILTON, Fla. -- James W. Perschka, of Milton, formerly of Sharpsville, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 5, 2002, in his home. He was 67.
Howard F. Shultz Sugar Grove Township man was retired mechanic Howard F. Shultz, 383 Leech Road, Sugar Grove Township, formerly of Mount Pleasant, Pa., died at 9:11 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 64. Mr. Shultz was born June 12, 1938, in Carpentertown, Pa., to Eugene S. and Ruth E. Kelly Shultz. He was a 1956 graduate of East Huntington High School. As a member of Hadley Presbyterian Church, he served as a church elder, deacon, trustee and church custodian. Mr. Shultz was a retired mechanic, having worked for 14 years for Cooper-Jarrett trucking, and 14 years with Preston Trucking, both West Middlesex. Prior to that, he worked for Kelly Pontiac and Hixson Graft in Scottdale, Pa. Since retirement, Mr. Shultz spent time helping friends. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, flying kites and spending time with his grandchildren. His wife, the former Darlene Evans, whom he married on Aug. 29, 1959, survives at home. Also surviving are: one son, Jeffrey H. Shultz and his wife Victoria, Hermitage; one daughter, Wendy Ann Shultz, Conneaut Lake; one sister, Mrs. Dwayne (Emma Ruth) Howard, Acme, Pa.; and two grandsons, Timothy A. and Jacob E. Shultz. Mr. Shultz was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Robert E. and Glenn V. Shultz. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 59 N. SHULTZ Geraldine E. Silvis Former Sharon woman had taught in one-room school SLIGO, Pa. -- Geraldine E. Silvis, Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, formerly of Sharon, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday (10-9-02) in the center. She was 91. Mrs. Silvis was born May 1, 1911, in Curllsville, Pa., a daughter of Ralph and Florence Males Elliott. She graduated in 1930 from Sligo High School and received her teaching certificate from Clarion State College. Mrs. Silvis was married to Gerald T. Silvis, who is deceased. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Licking Township, Clarion County, for seven years and later taught in Mercer County. Following that, she worked for 12 years at the former Standard Paper and Candy Co. of Sharon. Her last employment was at the former Whitmer-Smith's ladies clothing store in downtown Sharon. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sharon and was also a Sunday school teacher and treasurer of the Sunday School Department of the church. She also belonged to Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 242, also Sharon. Surviving are: one brother, Albert Elliott, Clarion; three sisters, Eileen Varner, Butler; Carolyn Heeter, Sligo; and Marjorie Smith, Mayport; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Silvis was preceded in death by a brother, John Elliott; and a sister, Eleanor Elliott.
SILVIS Ethel G. Stevenson Sharon woman made Santa costumes for club Ethel G. Stevenson, 529 Brookfield Ave., Masury, formerly of 494 Fourth Ave., Sharon, passed away at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday (10-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 78. Mrs. Stevenson was born Aug. 30, 1924, in Butler County, a daughter of George Criley and Bernice Pontius Criley. She was educated in Butler School District. She and her husband moved to the Shenango Valley in 1941. Earlier in her life, Mrs. Stevenson had been employed by the former Metal Manufacturing in Sharon and the former Erme's Restaurant in Sharpsville. She was well known at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404 home in Sharpsville, where she was a member of the Auxiliary and served with the catering group. She also made Santa Claus costumes for the Sharpsville Service Club. Mrs. Stevenson was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon and enjoyed flower gardening, card playing and spending time at the VFW. A devoted wife, she was married to Paul Edward "Fuzzy" Stevenson on Sept. 1, 1941. He passed away on April 14, 1999. A loving mother, Mrs. Stevenson leaves: three daughters, Mrs. Roger (Donna M.) Fraley and Theresa J. Ekis, both Sharon; and Mrs. Troy (Brenda L.) Garrett, West Middlesex; and one son, William D. Stevenson, Sharon. Also surviving are: two sisters, Mrs. Rick (Virginia) Pfeuffer, Congers, N.Y.; and Mrs. Arthur (Judith) Schnur, Herman, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, Donald and Pamela Stevenson; Karen Howard, Sharon Sorg; Shawn, Robert and Janet Stevenson; Kelly McMann, Kenneth Knight, Leanne Ekis and Stephanie Garrett; and nine great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Paul Edward Stevenson Jr.; two sisters, Jean McGinnis and Dorothy Lardin; and six brothers, William, Paul, Harold, Richard and Kenneth Criley; and George Criley Jr.
STEVENSON George W. Wood Eau Claire man belonged to Church of Nazarene George W. Wood, Orchard Manor, Pine Township, formerly of Eau Claire, Pa., passed away Tuesday evening (10-8-02) in Orchard Manor following an extended illness. He was 87. Born on June 25, 1915, in Argentine, Butler County, Mr. Wood was a son of Robert and Minnie Wade Wood. He was employed for 30 years as a drill press operator at Cooper Energy Service Reciprocating Products, Grove City. As a member for more than 50 years of Church of the Nazarene in St. Petersburg, Pa., he had served as a Sunday school superintendent and teacher and had also been a choir director at the church. Mr. Wood enjoyed hunting, gardening and tending to his rose bushes. He is survived by: his wife, the former Betty E. Hamilton, whom he married on March 5, 1948; one daughter, Elaine Smith, Mercer; one son, Fred Wood, Butler; four grandchildren, Shane and Shawna Wood, both Butler; and Michael and Melissa Smith, Mercer; two great-granddaughters, Kiersten and Kierra Wood, both Butler; one sister, Rose Bishop, Slippery Rock; and one brother, C. Robert Wood, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers.
