'A Night of Fire' will honor 'Mr. Fireworks' Zambelli

"A Night of Fire," a tribute to George Zambelli Sr. of New Castle, is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at Mercer Raceway Park.

The 75-year-old Zambelli, recognized around the world as "Mr. Fireworks," is president of Zambelli Internationale, which bills itself as the oldest fireworks company. It was started in 1893.

"This is a true honor for Mercer Raceway Park to be able to host a tribute for such a worldwide figure," said Vicki Emig, who has owned the track for four years. "The concept of this show started as a Halloween-theme with racing, stunts and fireworks," she added.

After the track contacted Zambelli about a fireworks display, the idea took off, and turned into the tribute to Zambelli, she said.

The performers, many of them nationally known, will do stunts of various kinds, including car jumps through fire and explosions.

Among the performers are professional stuntmen Tommy McTague, Benny Koske and Doug Rose. Kicking off the program will be a 30-lap backward/frontward stock car race.

"This show is for people of all ages," Emig said of the evening. "Whether you're a fireworks lover, pyro enthusiast, stunt watcher or motorsports hardcore -- this show's for you."

Tickets will be sold beginning at 4 p.m. Prices for adults are $13, for students 6-15, $5 and free for children 5 and under. Family passes will be available.

The show is being coordinated by the track and title sponsor, Armstrong Zoom Cable Internet Service.
