Wampler products were on the shelves

Local supermarkets that carried Wampler brand products have sent them back as part of the company's voluntary nationwide recall of cooked deli products.

The meat was recalled after a strain of listeria was discovered at the Wampler Foods plant in Franconia, near Philadelphia.

"We pulled everything when they told us Monday morning. We haven't sold anything (Wampler products) since," said Ed D'Onofrio, owner of Mr. D's Food Fair in Brookfield. He added that the store has dealt with Wampler Foods for about 20 years and there was never a problem until now.

"I think the company is just acting responsibly," D'Onofrio said of the recall.

Magnotto's Shop 'N Save in Hermitage carried only Wampler chicken rolls, which were not recalled, but the store will not be carrying any Wampler products until further notice, said Patty Spangler, deli manager.

D'Onofrio's Food Center in Hermitage had previously carried Wampler products but does not have any now, said a deli employee. The store advertised Wampler turkey breast deli meat in The Herald on Oct. 5 for a sale effective Oct. 6-12.

County Market in Pine Township carries only Wampler chicken salad, another item that was not recalled, a manager at the store said.

Giant Eagle stores do not carry Wampler products, a deli employee at the Hermitage store said.

The recall includes about 27 million pounds of food processed at the plant between May 1 and Friday, according to a letter from Pilgrim's Pride, Wampler's parent company.
