Four new scholarships and one new award were introduced at this year's annual William P. McDowell Scholarship dinner for Pennsylvania State University's Shenango Campus in Sharon.

About 250 people attended the dinner Tuesday at The Radisson Hotel of Sharon in Shenango Township.

The new scholarships are:

» The Dallas and Kristina Hartman Trustee Scholarship was established through a gift of $50,000 made by Dallas and Kristina Hartman of New Wilmington. Hartman, a lawyer, attended Penn State Shenango. The scholarship is matched by the university's trustees and is awarded to local students whoachieve outstanding academic success.

Hartman said what he learned at Penn State Shenango, and then at Youngstown State University, prepared him for Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pa., where he graduated near the top of his class.

No one succeeds on his own without help from God, family and other people who care, Hartman said. He said there were many people who were a part of his success. "By giving back, we're part of everybody else's success," he said.

» The Phillip J. Marrie Jr. Family Scholarship was established to honor Phillip Marrie for his 40 years as a community service leader in the Shenango Valley. A 1963 graduate of Penn State Shenango, Marrie is a member of the Penn State Shenango Advisory Board and will retire at the end of the month as community bank president of National City Bank.

» The Penn State Shenango Chemistry Scholarship was established by an anonymous donor and awarded for the first time to Dana Carly. The scholarship will be awarded each year to students with superior academic records or who show promise of outstanding success and intend to enroll in the Eberly College of Science, with the first priority going to students who are majoring in chemistry.

» Linda Durst, Sheri Morocco, Autumn Schultz, Rebecca Siders and Derek Vasconi were awarded The William Shannon Scholarship which was established through a $100,000 gift given by William F. Shannon in memory of his father, William Shannon. The scholarship is available to all full-time undergraduate students who are pursuing a baccalaureate or associate's degree in the Human Development and Family Studies program and who have positive academic standing and financial need.

» The Ann Wansack Student Award will recognize a full-time student enrolled at Penn State Shenango who is actively involved, through leadership or participation, for the betterment of the school. The award was created by a group of Penn State Shenango alumni, employees and friends of Ann "Mom" Wansack who was the game room supervisor at the Shenango campus for many years.

The Dallas and Kristina Hartman Trustee Scholarship, the Philip J. Marrie Jr. Family Scholarship and the Ann Wansack Student Award will all be presented for the first time next year.
