Giant Eagle says it pulled all Wampler products

While it's nothing to crow about, a Giant Eagle corporate spokesman acknowledged Wednesday that its Hermitage store was carrying Wampler Foods meat products but pulled the items from its deli even though they may not have been part of a voluntary nationwide recall.

On Tuesday an employee said the store didn't carry any Wampler products. But Rob Borella, director of corporate communications for the Pittsburgh-based supermarket chain, said the store carried Wampler chicken roll and turkey breast. All the products were pulled from stores, he said.

"It didn't matter to us if it had any particular code, if it had Wampler chicken roll or Wampler turkey breast on the label it was pulled from the case,'' Borella said.

The Herald incorrectly reported Wednesday Wampler chicken rolls were not part of the recall.

Wampler chicken rolls with item No. 14003 and bearing the code P1351 on its label are part of the recall, said Roy Atkinson, a Wampler spokesman. He said the company produces chicken rolls that weren't processed at its Franconia plant near Philadelphia and therefore aren't being recalled.

A strain of listeria was discovered at the Pennsylvania plant, resulting in the largest meat recall in U.S. history.

Consumers can return recalled items to the place of purchase for a full refund, Atkinson said. Also, the company has created a toll-free hot line for consumers: (877) 260-7110. Information also is available on the company's Web site at: www.wampler.com
