46 students hitting the books during after-school tutoring

Three weeks after the Sharon Middle-High School After-School Tutoring Program began, 46 students have signed up for academic help, but organizers said they're expecting to see a new influx of students.

Dawn Blaus and Elizabeth Milo, teachers who are in charge of the tutoring program, told school directors Wednesday some of the students who signed up did so voluntarily, while some were solicited or referred by teachers, administrators and counselors.

Mrs. Milo said she expects the number of students enrolled in the program to increase because progress reports were issued this week.

Although the program is open to any student in grades seven through 12 who would like extra help, it was originally designed for students who do not meet the eligibility requirements to participate in extra-curricular activities and athletics.

Of the students enrolled in the program, more than half asked for help in mathematics and 24 percent asked for help in English and reading, Mrs. Blaus said. She said a smaller number of students asked for help in social studies and science.

Some after-school tutors are paid teachers while some are volunteers who don't have teaching certificates but are qualified in the areas they are tutoring, Mrs. Milo said. She added the program needs tutors for upper level math and science courses, such as physics.

The tutoring sessions are offered from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

According to school policy, students participating in extra-curricular activities and sports who are not passing their core subjects and who do not meet Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association standards must attend the tutoring sessions until their grades improve if they want to continue to participate in activities.
