Women tell how Sharon man assaulted them

Two women allegedly assaulted by a Sharon man testified against him Friday.

Charges against Michael "Rockhead" Crawford, 20, of 302 Florence St., were sent to Mercer County Common Pleas Court after a preliminary hearing before District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage.

Patricia Anderson, 35, said Crawford hit her across the face with an aluminum flashlight Sept. 25 while she was walking along Hamilton Avenue in Farrell with a friend.

She said Crawford, carrying a flashlight, approached her and Jeffrey R. Pumphrey Jr. of Farrell. Crawford asked where they were going and they kept walking, she said. He then yelled to Pumphrey, "Hey white boy, come here," which made the two walk faster, she said.

They heard running footsteps behind them and then Crawford hit her across the face with the flashlight, Ms. Anderson said. Pumphrey ran to call police, she hid near a car screaming for help and Crawford ran off, she said.

She said the incident left her with a scar above her lip, sore gums, sensitive teeth and possibly a fractured nose. She was treated at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, according to Southwest Mercer County Regional police.

"I fear for myself," she said outside the courtroom.

Before police caught up with Crawford, they said, he also forced his way into a 27-year-old woman's home in the 700 block of Federal Street, Farrell, and tried to perform oral sex on her.

That woman, whom police said was a former girlfriend, testified that she tried calling police, but Crawford slapped her to the ground and she dropped the phone. She pleaded with him several times not to hurt her, but she said he only laughed and told her to shut up. Eventually, she said, she escaped from her home wearing only a T-shirt and ran four blocks to the home of a friend who called police.

Her friend testified that the woman was hysterical when she arrived, screaming and crying that she was almost raped.

The woman's face was swollen and bleeding and her neck was sore, but she did not seek medical treatment, police said.

Police originally charged Crawford with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of burglary, reckless endangerment, simple assault, aggravated indecent assault and attempted rape.

Assistant District Attorney Robert Kochems said the aggravated indecent assault charge was withdrawn and replaced with a charge of involuntary deviant sexual intercourse or attempted rape after testimony Friday supported the change.

Crawford was returned to Mercer County Jail after failing to post a total of $20,000 bond, $10,000 for each case. Crawford asked Russo to reduce bail to $5,000, but Russo denied it, adding that Crawford can petition common pleas court for a change in bond.

Crawford is represented by public defender Lowell Williams.
