Koborie neighbors oppose name change

Trumbull Drive homeowners are asking that their street not be renamed in honor of Rebecca Koborie, the Sharon native who was killed in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

The residents wrote to Sharon council: "All of us are well past 65 years of age and do not wish to go through the difficulties and hassles involved in changing all our legal and personal affairs."

Ms. Koborie, 48, of Guttenberg, N.J., was working for Marsh and McClennan Inc. on the 97th floor of the first World Trade Center tower to be hit by a hijacked jet. The plane hit the 96th through the 103rd floors.

Last month council said it planned to rename Trumbull Drive -- where Ms. Koborie's parents John and Julie Koborie live, and Bicentennial Park in honor of Ms. Koborie.

The letter signed by five homeowners -- Peter and Elizabeth Reale, Mrs. Joseph Rusbashan, Frances W. Dunsmore, Norman Hassel and Stanton and Donna Rambeck -- was read at Thursday's council meeting.

"We ... are not in favor of changing the name of our street to Becky Koborie Lane," the letter said. The residents said they weren't contacted by city officials about the idea and learned about the plan from a story in The Herald.

"Thus we are now placed in the very difficult position of voicing our objection to renaming Trumbull Drive. John and Julie Koborie are not just our neighbors, but our friends," the letter said.

The homeowners requested council table the motion.

During the meeting, council heard the first reading of the motion to rename the street. The measure can be changed before the second reading, after which council votes.

Councilman Louis F. Rotunno, who proposed renaming the street, said he still backs the plan.

John Koborie said he didn't know his neighbors were sending the letter and renaming the street was not his idea.
