Ex-area doc faces exposure charges

A former Greenville doctor faces criminal charges and a civil lawsuit after patients, colleagues and employees said he dropped his pants and exposed himself to them during summer and fall of 2000.

David L Graham, 58, of 559 Sommers Road, Somers, Mont., formerly of Greenville, has been charged with seven counts each of indecent exposure and open lewdness and is awaiting trial in Mercer County Court of Common Pleas. He is free on bail.

The original complaint was filed by Mercer County investigator Charles Gaffney on June 17.

According to the complaint, Graham exposed himself to three female patients during appointments and consultations; to a group of four medical personnel from his office and from UPMC Horizon, Greenville, during a July 2000 lunch meeting; and to a female employee in her office.

Graham had offices located in the Medical Arts building at 21 Jefferson Ave., Sharon and in Greenville Plaza, Hempfield Township.

According to the complaint, Graham allegedly exposed himself to three female patients during consultations Aug. 29, Oct. 31 and Sept. 8, 2000. The women told a Gaffney similar stories about the incidents: In the course of an appointment where they were talking about weight problems with Graham, Graham described a liposuction procedure he had recently undergone. Graham then pulled his pants down to his knees and in some cases, lifted his shirt, exposing himself, telling the women he wanted "to show the scars."

He was not wearing underwear at the time, the women said.

Graham approached a woman he employed around the same time in her office and closed the door, the woman said in a statement. Graham allegedly said to her, "I hope this won't embarrass or offend you," and pulled down his pants. The woman said she did not give him permission to do so, and cried about it during her lunch break.

Four other women said Graham exposed himself at a lunch-time meeting during July of 2000. Two doctors from UPMC Horizon, Greenville, a nurse from that hospital, and a nurse employed by Graham were at the meeting, which one woman said was to discuss diabetes.

The women were all seated at a table when Graham began talking about his recent liposuction procedure and pulled down his pants -- presumably to show his scars -- and was not wearing underwear at the time, the complaint alleges.

The nurse said in a statement Graham's actions caused her to fear what he might do in the future.

One of the women, Cynthia Murphy of Farrell, has filed a civil suit against Graham in Mercer County court.
