Money raised from single-copy sales of The Herald on Sept. 11 and advertising associated with the one-year anniversary edition of the paper raised $1,635 for the Rebecca Koborie Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship fund was created by her parents, John and Julie Koborie of Trumbull Avenue, Sharon, and other family members after Ms. Koborie was killed in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

"This will be an everlasting remembrance in her memory that can't be taken away," said John Koborie Sunday afternoon. "We are grateful that the Herald awarded Becky this honor. We thank them for remembering her."

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Sharon High School senior who plans to major in a music-related field. The scholarship fund was created through the Shenango Valley Foundation, Sharon.

Prior to the donation, the scholarship fund had about $13,000 in it. The first scholarship of $1,000 was awarded in May to Megan Adovasio, 18, of 356 Columbia St., Sharon. She is a music business major at Clarion University.

The family set up the scholarship for students who are majoring in the music field because of their daughter's love of music. Ms. Koborie, a 1971 Sharon high graduate, played and sang in piano bars and restaurants and was involved in theater and choral groups in high school, college and after college. John Koborie said though the family is still grieving, the donation to the scholarship fund helps them.

"It brightens our outlook a little bit because it shows us that some people do still care," Koborie said.
