Police say pair beat, robbed, tied man's uncle with tape

A Sharpsville man is charged with beating and robbing his uncle with the help of a Sharon man, leaving the 53-year-old Jefferson Township man unconscious and bound with duct tape, state police said.

Dennis Paul Michael, 29, of 100 W. Ridge Ave., Apartment 21, Sharpsville, and John R. Wilcox, 29, of 459 Ohio St., Sharon, were both charged with robbery, theft and aggravated assault after they allegedly robbed and beat Paul Pesek of Jefferson Township, police said. Charges were filed before District Justice Henry Russo, Hermitage.

Pesek told police that Michael, his nephew, and Wilcox woke him up at 3:30 a.m. Sunday by knocking on his door. Pesek let the men into his home and they started pounding him with their fists, police said. Pesek passed out and when he woke up later he found himself restrained in his bed, his hands duct-taped behind his back, police said.

After untying himself, Pesek told police he cleaned some of the blood from his face and called a friend for help.

His friend drove him to UPMC Horizon where he was treated for injuries including a broken nose, an injured eye, possible broken bones and numerous lacerations, police said.

An unknown amount of money, tools and a .22 caliber Remington Pump rifle were stolen from Pesek's home, police said. Police aren't sure if anything else was stolen, police said.

Michael, who has past drunken driving and assault charges, was released on $25,000 unsecured bond. Wilcox, who also has previous drunken driving charges, was released on $10,000 bond. The men were released on the condition that the refrain from using drugs and alcohol and avoid any contact with Pesek.

Wilcox, who is currently on probation, was also ordered to continue receiving drug and alcohol treatment. Michael must attend drug and alcohol counseling.

A preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. Nov. 8 at District Justice Ruth French's Mercer court.
