'Tis the season in Salem

Shenango Valley Center for Aging/Geriatric Health, a division of Mercer County Area Agency on Aging Inc., 220 N. Buhl Farm Drive, announces November activities.

The center is offering two new programs. On Mondays at 2 p.m., Evelyn Minshull will lead "Writing the Stories of Your Life." A 500 card class will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

In celebration of Thanksgiving, the center will be closed from Nov. 28 and will reopen on Dec. 2.

Other activities include:

   » Tuesday -- 9 a.m., Blood sugar screening; and 11:30 a.m., center council meeting.

   » Nov. 6 -- 10 a.m., AARP Shenango Valley Chapter 3616 board meeting; 11:30 a.m., diabetes information by Dr. Paul Lang; and 1:30 p.m., AARP meeting.

   » Nov. 7 -- 11:15 a.m., Elder law update by Attorney Carolyn Hartle; and 11:30 a.m., Animal Appeal information by Jill Blance.

   » Nov. 11 -- Center closed for Veterans Day.

   » Nov. 12 -- 11:15 a.m., Diabetic shoe display with program by Shelly Krasinski.

   » Nov. 13 -- 11:30 a.m., "Weather and Lung Disease" with Marilyn McCabe of A.M. Respiratory Alliance.

   » Nov. 14 -- 11:15 a.m., Elder law update.

   » Nov. 18 -- 11:30 a.m., Consumer update by Nancy Loughry of Mercer County Community Action Agency.

   » Nov. 19 -- 11:15 a.m., "E-coli" video with Ginger of Penn State Cooperative Extension.

   » Nov. 20 -- 11:30 a.m., "Osteoporosis" with Dr. Lang.

   » Nov. 21 -- 9 to 11 a.m., Eyeglass cleaning and minor repairs by Shirley Shanes of Keystone Blind Association; and 11:15 a.m., Birthday party with Hermitage schools.

   » Nov. 25 -- 10 a.m., Euchre class; and 11:15 a.m., Thanksgiving program with the center choral group.

   » Nov. 26 -- 11:15 a.m., Preferred Provider Program with John Drotar.

   » Nov. 27 -- 11:15 a.m., Thanksgiving program.

Daily activities are puzzles and games. The center is also available afternoons for cards and other games including dominoes, Scrabble and pool. Seniors may also walk the track from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Computer classes are available by appointment.

A mini-breakfast is served daily from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Donation is $1, if not staying for lunch.

Assistance with tax, rent rebate and PACE forms are offered by appointment only from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

The Unique Boutique is open from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

Haircuts by Pam Dorfi are available from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 27. The $2 fee will be donated to the center.

   » Monday -- 9:30 a.m., Music therapy with Judy Christ, certified music therapist; 11 a.m., choral group with Jane Bartholomew; 1 p.m., tap dancing by Bonnie Banick; and Mah Jongg.

   » Tuesday -- 9:30 a.m., Blood pressure screening with Rural Metro; and balance exercises with Jon Kolb and Corie Komarc of the Physical Fitness Center of Sharon Regional Health System; 10 a.m., crochet/crafts; 10:30 a.m., sing-along; 10:45 a.m., Energy Choreography with Kathy Gracenin; and 3 p.m., Yoga with Joni Laeng of Primary Health. The balance exercise fee is $1.

   » Wednesday -- 10:30 a.m., Tai Chi/Qigong with Nick Gracenin; and 1 p.m., Movie Classics.

   » Thursday -- 10 a.m., Line dancing with Marlene Comunale; 11 a.m., Yoga; 1 p.m., Mah Jongg; and 3 p.m., balance exercises.

   » Friday -- 10:30 a.m., Tai Chi; 11:30 a.m., speaker/handout; and 1 to 3 p.m., Shuffleboard.

The center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch is served weekdays at noon for a donation of at least $1.50 that includes the mini-breakfast. Please come in no later than 11:30 a.m. to sign up.
