Man sentenced for break-in, fight with cops

A 33-year-old Farrell man was sentenced Wednesday following a June break-in and resisting arrest incident.

Carletis E. Williams, of 1212 Washington St., Farrell, was arrested at 2:16 a.m. June 24 after a domestic incident and charged with violating a protection from abuse order, burglary, criminal trespass and aggravated assault after he broke into a woman's home through a basement door in the 1000 block of Fruit Ave.

On June 24 Williams broke inside the home and tried to assault a woman who had a protection from abuse order against him, according to a police complaint.

Two Southwest Mercer County Regional and one Sharon policemen responded to a call at the home and ended up in a scuffle with Williams. As Williams fought with the three police, one was punched in the eye, another in the chest and head and a third in the head. Williams fled on foot but was caught shortly after. One of the officers was treated at UPMC.

Prosecutor Tim Bonner reminded Mercer County Common Pleas Judge Michael Wherry in court Wednesday that the system is usually tougher on criminals who target police.

Williams told Wherry that he was "very drunk" at the time and has limited recollection of what happened between him and police.

Williams said he has tried to turn his life around. He said he found a job, has had visits with his daughters and has undergone treatment at a Grove City halfway house.

"I just want some pride in my life. I don't want to go to jail. I still have my whole life ahead of me," Williams said in court.

He was sentenced to 6 to 24 months in jail but the six months he spent in rehabilitation will count as time served. Williams must continue the program until Jan. 13, 2003, when he will be placed on 10 years of probation.
