College award recipients named

Area residents were among those to receive 2002-03 awards from Shenango Campus of Pennsylvania State University, Sharon. They are:

The following are selection criteria for scholarships at Shenango Campus of Pennsylvania State University:

   » Shenango Campus Advisory Board Scholarship -- Exemplary qualities of scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service to the campus and community.

   » Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Scholarship -- Awarded to freshmen who have achieved superior academic records and have demonstrated potential to contribute to the campus.

   » C.W. Borgerding Scholarship -- A university-funded scholarship that is awarded to campus students in recognition of their academic achievement.

   » Bunton-Waller Scholarship -- Awarded by the Office of Student Aid to undergraduates who are enrolled full-time. Recognized are students with outstanding academic records or who show strong academic potential.

   » Louise Carnegie Scholarship -- This university-funded scholarship is awarded to campus students in recognition of their academic achievement.

   » Paul and Eleanor Chadderton Scholarship -- Established to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled or planning to enroll in the baccalaureate degree in business and have demonstrated need for funds.

   » Penn State Shenango Chemistry Scholarship -- Created by an anonymous donor and available to students who have achieved superior academic records or who manifest promise of outstanding success and intend to enroll in the Eberly College of Science. First preference shall be given to students who are majoring in chemistry.

   » Oliver L. Christman Scholarship -- This university-funded scholarship is awarded by the College of Agriculture to Architecture and Horticulture students in recognition of their academic achievement.

   » Class of 1992 Memorial Scholarship -- A university-funded scholarship awarded to campus students in recognition of their academic achievement.

   » Commonwealth College Scholarship -- Recognizes the superior academic performance of students in any major who plan to enroll at Penn State-Shenango. This is a university-funded scholarship.

   » William T. and Jeanette C. Evans Scholarship -- Employees from the Shenango Valley Water Co. established this scholarship in recognition of William Evans upon his retirement. Available to students enrolled in the baccalaureate degree majors of business, engineering or environmental science who have demonstrated financial need.

Firth Scholarship in Agriculture -- Students must be full-time undergraduate students enrolled or enrolling in the College of Agricultural Sciences who residents of Mercer County and have achieved superior academic records and/or have demonstrated outstanding character and leadership qualities as evidenced by participation in 4-H or extracurricular activities.

   » Glenna Harris Memorial Scholarship -- Recognizes academic achievement with priority given to Sharpsville residents. Established by friends and family in memory of the eight-season Penn State-Shenango women's basketball coach who died in 1983.

   » Anna Mae "Mo" Helm Award -- The award was established by family and friends in memory of Anna Mae "Mo" Helm, a Penn State alumna and Shenango campus friend and advisory board member. It is awarded to a full-time incoming or current student who manifests promise of academic success and who demonstrated leadership in high school, campus or community activities.

   » Joy Cone Co. Scholarship -- Available to all undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll at Penn State-Shenango who have achieved positive academic records. First preference shall be given but is not limited to Joy Cone Co. employees and their families. Established in 2001.

   » Kielgaard Scholarship Agr-Bio-Eng -- A university-funded scholarship awarded to the College of Agriculture to ag students in recognition of their academic achievement.

   » Bayard D. and Ethel M. Kunkle Scholarship -- Aids outstanding students who have a need for funds to meet necessary college expenses. Scholarship recipients must show good citizenship, give evidence of leadership and exhibit professional promise.

   » Lingousky Scholarship -- This university-funded scholarship is awarded by the Office of Student Aid to campus students in recognition of their academic achievement.

   » William P. McDowell Scholarship -- Created through a generous endowment from William P. McDowell, this scholarship is awarded to superior students enrolled or planning to enroll through the early admission process, in the honors program or in a specific degree.

   » The Minority Student Assistance Fund Award -- Endowed by Penn State-Shenango Minority Affairs Community Advisory Board, this award recognizes a freshman who has attained a 2.5 high school grade point average or better. Preference will be given to students whose ethnic, cultural and/or national background contribute to the diversity of the Penn State-Shenango student body.

   » Robert O'Kresik Scholarship -- Established by Wheatland Tube Co., in memory of a longtime employee Robert O'Kresik and recognizes outstanding academic achievement.

   » Pedas, Sava, Penn State Legacy Award -- Recognizes a nontraditional full-time student from the Farrell or Wheatland area. Established by Ted Pedas and John Sava of Farrell, to honor Rosemary Sava.

   » Penn State Campuses -- Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with strong academic records or who show academic potential. Additional consideration is given to students who have records of service to the university or to the community.

   » Penn State-Shenango English Award -- This award, established by Margaret Foley and other friends of the Shenango campus, recognizes full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a liberal arts degree program at Penn State- Shenango. First preference is given to students majoring in English.

   » Dr. and Mrs. Arthur William Phillips Scholarship -- Given to full-time undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll at Penn State-Shenango, whose home address is in Butler, Crawford, Lawrence, Mercer or Venango counties, who manifest promise of academic success and have good moral character. Financial need considered; however, it is not a requirement.

   » Presidential Commonwealth Educational System Scholarship -- Provides recognition and financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled or planning to enroll at any Penn State Commonwealth campus.

   » Jean B. Proctor Scholarship -- This university-funded scholarship is awarded by the Office of Student Aid to campus students in recognition of their academic achievement.

   » Renaissance Scholarships -- Recipients are students with outstanding academic records who are full-time undergraduates demonstrating a need for financial assistance to complete their college education. These are $1,000 renewable scholarships and are awarded university-wide by the Office of Student Aid in accordance with guidelines established by the Renaissance Fund's Executive Committee.

   » Shenango General Scholarship -- Provides recognition and financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in programs at the Shenango campus.

   » The Denise Snyder Memorial Scholarship -- Established in 1987 by The Herald newspaper and friends and family, in memory of Denise Snyder, a Hickory High School student who died in 1987. It is available to a graduate of a Mercer County high school student who has demonstrated leadership ability, has been involved in school activities, and has maintained an above-average grade point average and has potential to contribute to the campus.

   » Anna Stewart Shannon Scholarship -- William Shannon established this scholarship in memory of his mother, Anna Stewart Shannon, to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled or planning to enroll in the bachelors of science degree in nursing at Shenango.

   » William Shannon Scholarship -- This award, established by William F. Shannon in memory of his father, William Shannon, is available to all full-time undergraduate students who are pursuing a baccalaureate or associate degree in the human development and family studies program and who have a positive academic standing and have demonstrated financial need.

   » Sharonsteel Scholarship -- This award, which is a full four-year scholarship to Penn State, was established by the Sharonsteel Foundation. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement, school and community involvement, financial need and recommendation. Preference will be given to a Shenango Valley resident.

   » Shenango Valley Initiative/Alice Robinson Memorial Scholarship -- Established by the Shenango Valley Initiative in memory of Alice D. Robinson, a Penn State-Shenango student who passed away in 1998. This scholarship is available to a female student enrolled or planning to enroll at Penn State-Shenango and whose ethnic, cultural, and/or national background contribute to the diversity of the campus.

   » Shirley A. Snyder Award -- This scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Shirley A. Snyder, head librarian at the Shenango campus for 25 years. It is awarded to an outstanding student who is enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program at Penn State-Shenango.

   » Paul and Thelma Stickle Memorial Scholarship -- The Office of Student Aid awards this scholarship. Students must be full-time undergraduate students from New Castle High School enrolling or enrolled at any campus location who have achieved superior academic success, or who have been significantly involved in community service, or who have a proven financial need.

   » Robert E. Weber Award -- This award is given in the memory of Dr. Robert E. Weber, assistant professor of mathematics, and honors academic excellence in mathematics at the campus.

   » Leo L. Werner Scholarship -- This scholarship was established in 1995 by the Werner Co. of Greenville. It is awarded to a student enrolled or planning to enroll at Penn State-Shenango, has achieved positive academic records, manifests promise of outstanding academic success, and has a proven financial need. First Preference will be given to Werner Co. employees or their family members.
