Man sentenced for assault on pal

A Jefferson Township man who pleaded guilty to aggravated assault was sentenced to prison Wednesday.

Matthew L. Pumphrey, 19, of 201 Charleston Road, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of aggravated assault in connection with the brutal beating of a West Middlesex man last December.

Pumphrey attacked Lincoln J. Rombold Dec. 7, hitting him with a baseball bat and also kicking, punching and choking him, police said.

Pumphrey said he assaulted his former friend because Rombold allegedly stole several hundred dollars in checks from his parents.

Judge Michael Wherry sentenced Pumphrey to 18 months to 6 years in prison and ordered him to pay Rombold's medical bills.
