Man slugged
deputy during warrant arrest, police say

A Mercer County sheriff's deputy got more than he bargained for when he tried to arrest a Farrell man.

Deputy David DeVenney approached James R. West, 27, of 204 Union St., at 10 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of Idaho Street in Farrell and tried to arrest him on a Hermitage warrant for retail theft and a Southwest Mercer County Regional police warrant for unpaid fines, Southwest police said Monday.

West resisted and the struggle with DeVenney took the men into the street, police said.

West hit the deputy in the side of the head, breaking DeVenney's eyeglasses, and ran into the 900 block alley between Spearman and Wallis avenues, police said.

A Southwest policewoman followed West in a cruiser, but lost him when he ran through yards, police said.

DeVenney suffered head and hand injuries, police said.

West was arrested at 11:09 a.m. Friday at home after Pennsylvania Probation and Parole agents spotted him, police said.

West is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, simple assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, police said.

West was taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for 9:15 a.m. Nov. 13.
