George, Haynes honored

Joe George, president of Joy Cone Co., received the "Person of the Year'' award from the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce and Larry Haynes, executive director of the Shenango Valley Foundation, received the Henry Evans Volunteer of the Year Award.

Both men were honored Thursday night at the chamber's annual dinner at Tiffany Banquet Center in Brookfield.

Over the years George has been involved in a number of development and social activities in the area.

He is a former member of the Hermitage Economic Development Commission, a director of the F.H. Buhl Club, director of Consumers Pennsylvania Water Co., schools and scholarship committee member and recruiter for Harvard College in western Pennsylvania.

A member of Notre Dame parish in Hermitage, he has received a number of awards over the years, including American Business Women's Association's Boss of the Year Award in 1998, the French Creek Council, Boy Scouts of America, Distinguished Citizen Award in 1999 and the Louis and Barbara Thiel Distinguished Service Award in 1998.

He and his wife, Ruthanne Beighley, who is Joy Cone's general counsel, between them have six children.

Haynes is also known for his involvement in the community. He is executive director of the Northern Mercer County Community and Lawrence (County) Community Foundation and pastor of the Grace Chapel Community Church.

He is on a number of boards, including Shenango Valley YMCA, Mercer County Head Start, Community Foundations for Pennsylvania and the ARC Foundation and is president of the Shenango Valley Initiative, a local faith-based social justice organization.

He also is a former manager with the Hermitage Little League and youth tennis coach.

He and his wife, Linda D. Haynes, have four children.
