A 14-year-old Masury boy was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. Monday in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Youngstown, after he crashed a car that belonged to his mother, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Mahoning County coroner's office.
Johnathan D. Yensick of 7800 Elm St. died from multiple internal injuries, said Frank DeMain, coroner investigator.
The highway patrol said the teen-ager was northbound on Standard Avenue when the car slid on wet pavement, left the right side of the road and hit a utility pole and railroad crossing sign at 9:35 p.m. Sunday.
FirstEnergy said the car sheared the pole at Standard and Oak Street, initially leaving a handful of Masury customers without power. However, when crews replaced the pole at 6 a.m. Monday, the utility was forced to cut off 750 customers. Power was fully restored at 7:30 a.m.
Johnathan was first taken to the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System.
The highway patrol said he took the car from his mother's house, where he also lived. She told police she thought he had left on his bicycle.
The crash remains under investigation, the highway patrol said.
Johnathan was an eighth-grade student at Brookfield Middle School. The school had grief counselors in all day Monday and counselors will be available all week, said assistant principal Jason Menz.
