Keystone Blind Association gives awards to volunteers

Keystone Blind Association, Sharon, had is annual volunteer awards and recognition dinner Nov. 4. Jonathan Fister, president and chief executive officer, praised the volunteers, organizations and businesses for their support over the past year.

The following accolades were given:

   » Lillian Rosenblum Award -- Mary Ellen Shaw. Given to a volunteer whose commitment and dedication to service exemplifies excellence and selflessness.

   » Charm Fischer Award -- Louise Bennett. Given to a blind person whose lifestyle reflects a level of independence that sets a standard for others.

   » Chairman's Award -- Michael Barr. Given to a past chairman of the board of directors in recognition of faithful and devoted service to the agency during their tenure.

   » Distinguished Service Award -- Scott Kalmanek. Given to a board member who has demonstrated the ability and willingness to do more than is expected.

   » Excellence in Service Award -- Nikolas Preece. Given to a volunteer in recognition of efforts in service of blind children.

   » Incredible Kid Award -- Mark Eicher. Given to a Keystone Kid in recognition of their own exemplary accomplishments and for selflessness in helping others.

   » Andrew Regule Award for Lionism -- Jack Ries. Given to a District 14-F Lion for exemplary dedication and service to blind and visually-impaired persons.

   » Helen Keller Award for Independence -- District 14-F, Region IV Lions. Given to an organization that provides resources to promote independence of the blind and visually impaired in the community.

   » Leadership in Giving Award -- Sharon and Greenville Lions clubs. Given to Lions clubs for philanthropic leadership in support of services of the blind and visually impaired.

   » Community Partnership Award -- Sharon American Legion Post 299, Hermitage Rotary and Mahoning Valley Sports Charities. Given to organizations for financial and moral support necessary for execution of KBA's mission.

   » Partnership in Service Award -- Prince of Peace Center, Lawrence County Blind Association and Youngstown City Schools. Given to businesses or organizations for recognizing the value of cooperation in serving communities.

   » Good Neighbor Award -- Zion's Community Preschool. Given to an educational facility for outstanding participation in the agency's Prevention of Blindness Program.

   » Guardian Angel Award -- Sue Bentson and Anne Johnston. Given to volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to the agency's Prevention of Blindness Program.

Fister thanked all volunteers for their dedication and service in support of the agency's mission, which is to maintain and improve the quality of life for those who are blind or visually impaired, prevent blindness and provide employment opportunities and advocacy for those who are disabled.
