Early morning ice blamed
for several fender-benders

Although the temperature rose above 50 Wednesday, the winter driving season is upon us, if a slew of early-morning crashes is any indication.
Only one person was believed to have been taken to a hospital for injuries suffered in any of the crashes.
Shenango Township police said three accidents occurred at roughly the same time on the state Route 60 bridge southbound over Interstate 80.
In each case, the vehicles hit ice going around a bend, said Police Chief Ronald Preston.
"Everybody was sliding to the left," he said.
The first call came in at 7:35 a.m. when a pickup slid into the guardrail and ended up in the median.
A car following "did the same thing," Preston said. "They ended up right beside each other."
About five minutes later, another car hit the ice.
"He ended up hitting the same guardrail and ended up hitting the first car," Preston said.
The worst accident occurred in the northbound lane, when a car hit the bridge wall and rolled onto its roof, Preston said.
State police, who were asked by Preston to investigate the crash, had no report available.
Preston said he believes a woman was taken to a hospital, but had no information on her.
Preston said more accidents could have happened if police, including the Mercer County Sheriff's Department and Southwest Mercer County Regional police, and Shenango Township volunteer firefighters hadn't stationed themselves along the roadway to alert motorists to slow down.
A slippery roadway was blamed for a one-vehicle crash at 6:59 a.m. on Ohl Street in Greenville, police said.
The vehicle, driven by a Greenville man, slid into the fence of the Waste Management transfer station, police said.
Southwest said a couple of fender-benders were the result of black ice, and police in Hempfield Township and Brookfield said slippery conditions caused minor accidents.
