Farrell man

A Farrell man, charged last week with breaking into five vehicles, had a slew of new charges filed against him Wednesday and Thursday.

Hermitage police filed 10 counts of theft, seven counts of criminal mischief, three counts of receiving stolen property, two counts of forgery and one count each of identity theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, possessing instruments of crime and criminal trespassing against Brad A. Laverty, 23, of 1120 Weitz Ave.

According to police, Laverty:

» Broke the windows of three pickups parked at CCL Container, 1 Llodio Drive, between 8 p.m. Nov. 11 and 8 a.m. Nov. 12. He took $2 in change and seven compact discs. He also entered an unlocked pickup between 3 p.m. Nov. 8 and 11 a.m. Nov. 9 at the same location and took a checkbook and cellular telephone.

» Cut a hole in the canvas top of a car parked at 2335 Highland Road between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Nov. 12. He took a purse containing $400, a digital camera and numerous personal items.

» Broke windows to enter two cars parked in the Shenango Valley Mall lot between 7 and 10 a.m. Nov. 12. He took $7 in change.

» Cut a hole in the canvas top of a car parked in the mall lot between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 13. He took change totaling less than $50.

» Entered an unlocked car and pickup parked at Miracle Valley Church, 2119 Valley View Road, between 6:45 and 8:45 p.m. Nov. 13. He took a flashlight from one and nothing from the other.

» Cashed five checks worth $327 Nov. 9 at two Hermitage grocery stores. He used the checkbook taken in the Nov. 9 theft and a customer appreciation card that had been stolen Nov. 1 or 2 from a car parked in West Middlesex.

The drug paraphernalia charges -- three crack pipes and related items -- and instruments of crime charges -- a screwdriver and a utility knife -- stem from the items being found in his car during a search Nov. 14, police said.

Laverty, who is addicted to crack cocaine, admitted breaking into about a dozen vehicles in the city, police said.

The investigation was aided by family members, who brought in items Laverty had stolen, police said. The family members said they hoped Laverty could get treatment for his addiction, police said.

Laverty was arraigned Thursday before District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage, on the latest charges, and taken to Mercer County Jail after faiing to post $17,000 bond.

Last week, police charged Laverty with five counts of theft for five break-ins, and one count each of receiving stolen property, forgery and access device fraud.
