Victor G. Costar Farrell native, WWII vet retired from Sharon Tube Victor G. Costar, 69 Rexford Drive, Hermitage, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 20, 2002, in his residence. He was 82. Mr. Costar was born June 3, 1920, in Farrell to Peter A. Costar Sr. and Olivia Staunch Costar. A graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1938, he retired in 1980 from the maintenance department of Sharon Tube Co. Mr. Costar was a member of Holy Cross Orthodox Church in Hermitage; American Legion Post 162, Sharpsville; and was a former member of the Romanian TBA Society. An Army Air Force veteran, he served as a sergeant during World War II. He bowled in the Sharon Tube League and Sunset Lanes Senior League, Farrell. Mr. Costar was an avid sports fan and fisherman. Surviving are: two sisters, Virginia Mitru, Hermitage; and Aurelia Kuehn, North Tonawanda, N.Y.; one brother, Peter A. Costar and his wife Nancy, Hermitage; six nieces and nephews; five great-nieces and -nephews; and one goddaughter, Shana Marie Reeves. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Gregory Costar, who died in 1979.
COSTAR Earl 'Skip' D. Vasilie Sharon Steel retiree was World War II Army vet Earl "Skip" D. Vasilie, 289 W. Park St., Hermitage, died unexpectedly at 4:23 p.m. Nov. 20, 2002, in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 78. Mr. Vasilie was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Wheatland to John and Gertrude Hilgert Vasilie. He attended Farrell High School and served in the Army during World War II as a parachuter. Mr. Vasilie worked for Sharon Steel as an electrician for 42 years, retiring in 1983. He attended First Assembly of God, Hermitage. Mr. Vasilie belonged to Sunset Bowling League of Farrell; Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage; a Tuesday morning golf league in Ohio; and the National Rifle Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed gardening. Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary Mistretta, whom he married April 26, 1947, at home; two sons, Dan Vasilie, Columbus, Ohio; and John Vasilie and his wife, Pam, Hermitage; two sisters Christina and her husband, John Macabobby, Struthers, Ohio; and Helen Rubalcava, Hubbard; and three grandchildren, Jason Vasilie, Sarah Vasilie and Sasha Lara. His mother; one sister, Victoria Fluent; and one brother, Michael Vasilie, preceded him in death.
VASILIE Rev. Dr. William W. Newby Army veteran was pastor, had counseling ministries A funeral service will be held Saturday for the Rev. Dr. William W. Newby, longtime Shenango Valley resident of 1116 Emerson Ave., Farrell, who dedicated his life to counseling young people and adults with problems. He passed away at 12:14 p.m. Tuesday (11-19-02) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 70. Dr. Newby was born June 21, 1932, in Huntsville, Ala., to Willie W. Newby and Laura M. Harden Newby. He attended schools in Alabama and Evangelical Theological Seminary in Dixson, Mo. A minister to those facing socio-religious problems, Dr. Newby, with his wife, spent much of his time working with people accused or convicted of crimes, their victims, families, attorneys and judges. He and his wife were counselors for Mercer County for five years. As a counselor in Mercer County, he was a co-founder of Revival Emphasis Inc. in Farrell, established in 1976. He was a retired minister and a former pastor for several years of Friendship Baptist Church in Farrell and a former chaplain at Mercer County Jail. He was currently a member and an associate minister at Second Baptist Church in Sharpsville. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean conflict and was a member and former chaplain for Veterans of Foreign Wars Murray-Bell Post 7597 in Farrell. In 1993, he was named to the Doctoral Review Committee of Evangelical Theological Seminary, reviewing doctoral proposals and theses of doctoral candidates. His wife, the former Dorothy V. Williams, whom he married Sept. 15, 1953, passed away Jan. 5, 1997. Surviving are: one son, William W. Newby IV, Galveston, Texas; a granddaughter, Savannah Ashley, Houston; four sisters, Richetta Thomas, Huntsville; Dorothy L. Chester and Brenda J. Reno, both Sharon; and Fannie M. Chester, Colorado Spring, Colo.; four brothers, Robert E. Newby Sr., Farrell; Henry E. Newby Sr., Hermitage; and Harvey L. Newby Sr. and Robert B. Newby, both Sharon; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three infant siblings; and one brother, Larry Newby.
NEWBY Anna Marie Bedich Ex-Sharon homemaker belonged to CFU groups A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday for Anna Marie Bedich, 941 Sharon-New Castle Road, Farrell, formerly of Stambaugh Avenue in Sharon. She passed away at 11:44 a.m. Wednesday (11-20-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 91. Mrs. Bedich was born on July 25, 1911, in Whitney, Westmoreland County, a daughter of Thomas Fumic and Frances Krall Fumic. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon. She also belonged to Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 126 in Farrell; the C.F.U. Auxiliary; and the C.F.U. Veseljaci singing group. Her husband, George Bedich, who she married Nov. 3, 1928, in Holy Trinity Church, Farrell, passed away May 24, 1992. Surviving are: four sons, George T. Bedich and his wife Karleen, Henderson, Nev.; Joseph E. Bedich and his wife Kathryn, Howland, Ohio; Walter L. Bedich and his wife Catherine, Transfer; and Thomas E. Bedich, Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Gilbert (Margaret) Robsel, Girard, Ohio; and 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Thomas Fumic; and a grandson, Bryan Bedich. BEDICH James N. 'Wayne' Cione Sharon Steel retiree was WWII vet, Fatima member A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday for James N. "Wayne" Cione, 1007 Leslie St., Sharon. He died of natural causes Wednesday morning, Nov. 20, 2002, in his home after a lengthy illness. He was 76. Mr. Cione was born Aug. 26, 1926, in Sharon to James Cione and Margaret Paule Cione. A graduate of Sharon High School Class of 1945, he was a highlift operator, having worked for 40 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant. He retired in 1988. Wayne served in the U.S. Army during World War II, for 17 months with the occupational forces in Japan. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant. As a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell, he belonged to the Holy Name Society, for which he was a past president. He also belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286; American Legion Post 160; and the Italian Home, all Farrell. Wayne was also a member of the United Steelworkers of America; Italian War Veterans Post 25, Sharon; and was a former member of several bocce leagues in the area. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. His wife, the former Elizabeth Gentile, whom he married Dec. 2, 1967, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, survives at home. Also surviving are: two sons, James "Jamie" Cione, husband of Kim, Middletown, N.Y.; and Wayne "Mick" Cione, Masury; three daughters, Adrianne Cione, Masury; Peggy Marinelli, wife of Gary, Boardman, Ohio; and Lizzie Ulan, Mercer; two brothers, Robert J. Cione, husband of Peggy, Hermitage; and Gerald A. Cione, West Middlesex; two sisters, Josephine Toth; and Sherrill Moss, wife of Richard, all Sharon; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Conrad "BoBo" Cione; and a grandson, Brian Cione. CIONE Robert M. Henning Farrell man was WWII vet, WE retiree, mall custodian Robert M. Henning, 1233 Negley St., Farrell, died at 1 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in his home after an extended illness. He was 84. Mr. Henning was born Nov. 25, 1917, in Farrell to John Henning and Sofia Zinz Henning. He graduated from Farrell High School in 1935 and worked for 33 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. He retired in 1980 as a core assembler. After his retirement, Mr. Henning worked for 20 years in the maintenance department of the Shenango Valley Mall in Hermitage. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sharon; the Saxon Club of Farrell; and the former Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 250, also Sharon. An Army veteran, Mr. Henning served in the Air Force during World War II. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, walking and the activities at the senior center. He was also an avid sports fan. His wife, the former Margaret Hutter, whom he married May 31, 1947, survives at home. Also surviving are: three daughters, Beverly and her husband James Hierholzer, Kettering, Ohio; Jayne and her husband James Hoover, West Sunbury; and Susan and her husband Daniel Dilley, Sharpsville; one sister, Eileen Shank, Hermitage; one brother, Harold Henning, Sharpsville; and six grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Mr. Henning was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Matilda Smith, Adele Roth, Selma Popadak, Margaret Wilson and Elsie Madura; and four brothers, an infant; and Edward, William and Walter Henning. HENNING Thomas W. Bettua Substitute teacher was store maintenance worker Thomas W. Bettua, 109 Lyle Drive, Hermitage, died unexpectedly at 3 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 70. Mr. Bettua was born April 10, 1932, in Farrell to Thomas Bettua and Phyliss Gargone Bettua. He graduated from Farrell High School in 1950 and later graduated from Youngstown State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in history. Mr. Bettua worked as a substitute teacher for 20 years in the Shenango Valley and also worked in the maintenance department of the former Treasure Island department store in Hermitage. He enjoyed baseball and attended Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell. Surviving are: his wife, the former Patricia Makis, at home, whom he married June 6, 1964; a daughter, Denise Bettua, Hermitage; a son, Larry and his wife Gretchen Bettua, also Hermitage; and two grandchildren, Connor and Jason Bettua. Mr. Bettua was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Larry Bettua.
BETTUA Carol Bernadine Bullis Mook Longtime Methodist was Meals-on-Wheels volunteer Carol Bernadine Bullis Mook, 129 E. Pine St., Grove City, formerly of New Wilmington, died at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday (11-19-02) in Orchard Manor, Pine Township. She was 92. Mrs. Mook was born March 18, 1910, in Minot, N.D., to Ralph Bullis and Adda Bullis. A graduate of Greenville High School Class of 1926, she was employed by Golden Dawn in Masury. Mrs. Mook was a member of White Shrine of Jerusalem and Blue Star Mothers of America. She also served as a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels of Grove City. For more than 50 years, she belonged to the Methodist church. Her husband, Lawrence A. Mook, whom she married June 8, 1943, died March 9 of this year. Surviving are: two daughters, Bernadine Morley and her husband Murray, Lake Worth, Fla.; and Crystobel Joy Palovich, Norfolk, Va.; three sons, Seth A. Hunt and his wife Nina, Bowmanville, Canada; Gaylord R. Hunt and his wife Shirley, Augusta, Ga.; and Clayre E. Mook and his wife Marybeth, New Wilmington; 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Mook was preceded in death by her parents.
MOOK Sue A. Combine '95 Brookfield High alumna was Catholic, animal lover Sue A. Combine of 7467 Stewart Sharon Road, Hubbard, Brookfield Township, died Saturday (11-16-02) in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, after being stuck by a vehicle. She was 25. Ms. Combine was born Aug. 6, 1977, in Farrell, a daughter of Raymond and Janet Roth Combine. She was a 1995 graduate of Brookfield High School and a Catholic by faith. Ms. Combine was also an animal lover. Survivors include: her father, Raymond Combine, Greenville; her mother and stepfather, Janet Combine and Jim Baird, Hubbard; one son, Jeffrey, at home; one brother, Raymond Combine II, Masury; and her maternal grandparents, Carl and Sue Roth, Masury. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Angelo and Charlotte Combine; and her maternal great-grandparents, John and Anne Geydos.
