Man charged with hitting
deputy will have day in court

Charges filed against a Farrell man accused of hitting a Mercer County sheriff's deputy have been held for court.

James R. West, 27, of 204 Union St., was charged with aggravated and simple assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.

District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage, held the charges for court at a preliminary hearing Nov. 13, and kept West's bond at $10,000.

West was returned to Mercer County Jail after failing to post bond.

Deputy David Devenney approached West, also known as Tionne Watkins, at 10 a.m. Nov. 1 in the 500 block of Idaho Street in Farrell and tried to arrest him on a Hermitage warrant for retail theft and a Southwest Mercer County Regional police warrant for unpaid fines, police said.

West resisted and the struggle with Devenney took the men into the street, police said.

West hit Devenney in the side of the head, breaking Devenney's glasses, and ran into the 900 block alley between Spearman and Wallis avenues, police said.

A Southwest patrolwoman followed West in a cruiser, but lost him when he ran through yards, police said.

Devenney suffered head and hand injuries, police said.

West was arrested at 11:09 a.m. at home after Pennsylvania Probation and Parole agents spotted him, police said.
