Neighbor enters smoky apartment to save baby

Jayme Stewart said she wasn't thinking about the smoke or a possible fire when she entered her neighbor's Shenango Park apartment in Hermitage at about 9:30 p.m. Monday.

All she could think about was saving the 1-year-old baby inside, she said.

"I smelled the smoke, and thought at first maybe someone had burned dinner," Ms. Stewart said.

Ms. Stewart went next door to 1465 Bolde Drive and entered the apartment. There was the baby, naked, and breathing in smoke, she said.

"I got the baby and gave him a diaper," Ms. Stewart said. "And I got him out of there."

A man, whom the neighbors identified as Larry Schultz, was naked on the floor, apparently passed out, she said. She said she couldn't wake him at first.

Ms. Stewart said she found Lisa Boyle, the baby's mother, in a back room, also apparently passed out. She was able to wake Ms. Boyle.

The baby was taken to UPMC Horizon, Farrell.

Bystanders said the apartment was rented by Schultz and Ms. Boyle.

Neighbors said the couple had been drinking earlier in the evening in another apartment.

Ms. Stewart said the fire may have been started in a pan she saw on the stove.

Hermitage and Sharon firefighters responded to the call, but officials were unavailable for comment Monday night.
