Valley man gets jail term for role in assault

A Farrell man was sentenced Tuesday to 3 months to 2 years in Mercer County Jail for his role in the September 2001 assault of a Sharon man.

DeWayne G. Johnson, 30, of 1156 Hamilton Ave., was sentenced by Mercer County Common Pleas President Judge Francis J. Fornelli. Johnson had pleaded guilty to simple and aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct.

Johnson punched Adrian Baker in the face three times while two other men -- including Percy Reed, 28, of 909 Dalton Ave., Hermitage -- held Baker by the shoulders, said Southwest Mercer County Regional police. Baker suffered a shattered eye socket, police said. The assault happened in the parking lot of New Murray Bell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7597 at 314 Idaho St., Farrell, when Baker accidentally bumped into Reed, police said.

Reed told Baker, "You ain't got no manners. You didn't say, 'Excuse me.' " Then Johnson and the other man assaulted Baker, police said.

VFW employees asked the men to leave because they were getting loud, police said.

While serving his jail time, Johnson will be eligible for work release, Fornelli said. Johnson also must undergo a mental health evaluation and complete anger-management counseling.
