The parents of a toddler found in a smoky apartment Monday evening have been evicted and have until Monday to move their belongings out, according to Shenango Park Apartments manager Donna Bell.

"I care about all of my renters and I don't want them afraid," Ms. Bell said Wednesday. "I feel sorry for the family, but this family can't stay."

Lisa Marie Boyle, 27, and Lawrence Schultz, 33, of 1465 Bolde Drive, Apartment 2D, were arraigned Tuesday before District Justice Henry J. Russo on charges of endangering their child and reckless endangerment. They were released on their own recognizance.

The couple were charged after they were found passed out drunk Monday night in their apartment while a pot of noodle soup was burning on the stove and their 14-month-old daughter, Alexis Schultz, was left naked and unattended, police said. Neighbors rescued the girl and turned the stove off after they found smoke coming out of the apartment.

Ms. Bell said this is the second smoke incident the pair has had at their apartment.

One incident occurred during the summer; it also was cooking-related, said Hermitage Fire Marshal Robert S. Goeltz. He added that a fire in February at their trailer in Dutch Lane Mobile Home Estates was caused by careless smoking.

Alexis was discharged Wednesday from UPMC Horizon, Farrell, a nursing supervisor said. Hermitage police said that Children and Youth Services had stepped in on the toddler's behalf. Beverly Burrows, who heads that department, was out of the office Wednesday and unavailable for comment.

Ms. Bell said the apartment complex has strict guidelines on fires and smoke detectors.

"We actually have people sign in their lease that if they tamper with their fire alarm, I don't care what it's for, they're evicted," she said. The apartment complex does a spot check of smoke detectors, she added.

Although the couple had not tampered with their smoke detectors, the two fire-related incidents and the "unacceptable" condition of their apartment were the reasons for their eviction, Ms. Bell said.

Maintenance has added extra fire alarms to the couple's apartment to allay any concerns from neighbors until the couple move out, Ms. Bell said.
