Sharon man was killed in Route 18 collision

A fatal two-car crash during a snow storm Saturday claimed the life of a 74-year-old Sharon man, police said Sunday.

Kevin Friedrich, 102 Euclid Ave., was driving north at about 5:30 p.m. on state Route 18 in Wilmington Township when his car crossed the center line and collided with a car driven by Brenda L. Jones, 33, of Westerville, Ohio, state police at Mercer said Sunday.

Friedrich died at 6:33 p.m. Saturday at Jameson Health System, New Castle, from injuries he suffered in the wreck, police said.

Ms. Jones, along with passengers Leona Boyle, 68, of New Wilmington, and Ms. Jones's daughter, 5-year-old Monica Jones of Westerville, suffered major injuries. All were wearing their seatbelts.

Ms. Jones' other daughter, Angela Jones, 3, was in a child restraint seat and suffered only minor injuries, police said.

They were taken to Jameson and later transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where Mrs. Boyle was admitted to the critical care unit. She remained in critical condition Sunday night, according to a nursing supervisor, while Ms. Jones and her two daughters were stable.

After the crash Saturday, neighbors and passersby who stopped to help noticed flames shooting out of Friedrich's car and pulled him from the wreckage.

Police said Friedrich was not wearing his seat belt. The lifelong Sharon resident graduated from Sharon High School in 1945.
