Penn State Shenango
names executive officer

When it comes to education, this Rookey is no rookie.

Pennsylvania State University's Shenango Campus announced Tuesday that Dr. Thomas J. Rookey has been named campus executive officer for the campus effective Jan. 13.

Currently director of the Dublin Campus of Middle Georgia College, Dr. Rookey has held senior academic administration positions at Medaille College in Buffalo, N.Y.; the Venango Campus of Clarion University of Pennsylvania; and the Educational Improvement Center of Princeton, N.J. He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from the State University College at Buffalo, his master of science in educational research from Bucknell University, and his doctorate in educational research and measurement from Lehigh University.

Dr. Rookey's background includes experience in stimulating campus growth, securing grant funds, increasing enrollment and expanding programs. Over the years he has worked with a number of community and government organizations ranging from the United Way, the Venango County Commissioners, the Chamber of Commerce and the New Jersey Senate.

Working on educational accreditation teams, his most recent publications have focused on recruitment, retention and grants.

"We are very pleased to have attracted someone with such a track record in campus growth, such dedication to non-traditional students, and such strong communications skills,'' said Dr. Disney, Penn State CWC dean. "He was the No. 1 choice of the Shenango community and brings the added advantage of familiarity with this part of Pennsylvania.''

In accepting the position, Dr. Rookey said he was "extremely pleased to join the Penn State Shenango team. The excellence of the faculty and staff, along with the outstanding community support, creates a compelling opportunity for an educator.''

Located in downtown Sharon, Penn State Shenango offers three bachelor's degrees, six associate's degrees, and a master's degree, as well as the first two years of education for more than 160 Penn State majors. One of 12 Penn State campuses, the Shenango campus has 1,000 enrolled students, plus others in its continuing education program.

During the search for a permanent campus executive officer, Dr. Frederic Leeds had been filling the role. In mid-January, he will return to his position as director of academic affairs.
